Most Bible scholars think Jesus was not a newborn when the wise men (magi) arrived, but likely a toddler. A common estimate is that He was somewhere around 1–2 years old.
Reason from Matthew’s account
Matthew records that Herod ordered all the boys in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under to be killed, based on the time he learned from the magi about when the star first appeared, which implies Jesus could have been up to about two years old at that point. This suggests the visit happened some time after His birth, not on the same night as the shepherds.
Clues from wording and setting
In Luke, at the time of the shepherds, Jesus is described with a word meaning “infant” and is lying in a manger, but in Matthew’s story of the magi He is called a “young child” and is found in a house, which fits a later stage of early childhood. Taken together with Herod’s two‑year window, many commentators conclude Jesus was probably around two years old, or at least within His first two years, when the wise men came.
