Celiac disease is a serious autoimmune disorder where ingestion of gluten causes immune attacks on the small intestine, resulting in damage that impairs nutrient absorption. If left untreated, it can lead to severe complications including malnutrition, anemia, osteoporosis, infertility, neurological issues, and an increased risk of certain cancers. In rare but severe cases called celiac crisis, patients can experience life-threatening metabolic disturbances requiring hospitalization. Although manageable with a strict gluten-free diet, untreated celiac disease carries a high burden of health risks and can be potentially life-threatening.
