Hurricane Idalia was a very strong hurricane in August 2023, reaching Category 4 strength at its peak with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph (215 km/h). It rapidly intensified from Category 1 to Category 4 in less than 24 hours before landfall. The hurricane made landfall near Keaton Beach, Florida, as a Category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of 115–125 mph and caused significant damage with strong winds and a powerful storm surge up to 12 feet in some coastal areas. The rapid intensification and strength made Idalia one of the most intense hurricanes at landfall in the region for recent years.
