Hurricane Katrina was extremely strong, reaching Category 5 status on the Saffir-Simpson scale with maximum sustained winds of 175 mph (280 km/h) and a minimum central pressure of 902 millibars at its peak on August 28, 2005. This made Katrina the fifth most intense Atlantic hurricane on record at the time and the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Gulf of Mexico at that time. However, by the time it made its second landfall near Buras-Triumph, Louisiana, it had weakened to a high-end Category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of 125 mph (201 km/h) and a central pressure of 920 millibars. Hurricane-force winds extended outward up to 120 miles from the center during landfall, and the storm caused catastrophic damage, especially in Louisiana and Mississippi.
