To appear offline on Steam, follow these steps: On Steam Desktop App:
- Open Steam on your PC.
- Click on the Friends & Chat button located at the bottom-right corner of the Steam window.
- In the Friends & Chat window, click the arrow next to your username at the top.
- From the dropdown menu, select Invisible to appear offline while still being able to access chat features.
- Alternatively, select Offline to completely go offline, which will prevent you from chatting or receiving invites, but your friends will see you as offline
On Steam Deck:
- Power on your Steam Deck.
- Tap your profile picture at the top right.
- Select Invisible from the dropdown menu next to your username to appear offline but stay connected to chat.
- Selecting Offline will log you out of Steam completely, making you unavailable for chat or invites
Additional Notes:
- The Invisible status makes you appear offline to friends but allows you to use chat and other features.
- The Offline status logs you out of the friends system, so you cannot chat or receive invites until you sign back in.
- You can switch statuses anytime, even while in-game, using the Steam overlay (Shift + Tab)
- Setting your status to Invisible or Offline on one device will sync across other devices where you use the same Steam account
This method lets you game or browse Steam without your friends knowing you are online unless you choose to interact.
