To calculate your GPA (Grade Point Average), follow these steps:
-
Identify the grade and credit hours for each course
Each grade corresponds to a certain number of grade points. For example, on a common 4.0 scale:- A = 4.0
- B = 3.0
- C = 2.0
- D = 1.0
- F = 0.0
Some scales include plus/minus variations (e.g., B+ = 3.3, A- = 3.7)
- Multiply the grade points by the credit hours for each course
This gives you the quality points for each course. For example, if you earned a B (3.0 points) in a 3-credit course, you get 3.0 × 3 = 9 quality points
-
Add up all the quality points
Sum the quality points from all your courses. -
Add up all the credit hours attempted
Only include courses that affect GPA calculation (exclude pass/fail, withdrawals, or incomplete grades as per your institution's rules)
- Divide the total quality points by the total credit hours
The result is your GPA. For example, if you earned 36 quality points over 12 credit hours, your GPA is 36 ÷ 12 = 3.0
Example:
- Course 1: A (4.0 points) × 4 credits = 16 quality points
- Course 2: B+ (3.3 points) × 3 credits = 9.9 quality points
- Course 3: C (2.0 points) × 5 credits = 10 quality points
- Total quality points = 16 + 9.9 + 10 = 35.9
- Total credits = 4 + 3 + 5 = 12
- GPA = 35.9 ÷ 12 = 2.99
Notes:
- Different institutions may use different grading scales (e.g., 7-point scale, weighted GPA for AP classes)
- Some grades like "Pass" or "Withdrawn" may not count towards GPA
- Always check your school’s specific GPA scale and policies for the most accurate calculation.
This method provides a clear way to calculate your GPA based on your grades and course credits.
