To charge Nintendo Switch controllers (Joy-Cons), you have several options:
- Attach Joy-Cons to the Nintendo Switch console: Slide the Joy-Con controllers onto the sides of the Switch console. Make sure the console is powered on or in Sleep Mode and connected to its AC adapter. The Joy-Cons will charge automatically while attached, taking about 3.5 hours to fully charge
- Use the Joy-Con Charging Grip: Attach the Joy-Cons to the Joy-Con Charging Grip, then connect the grip to the Nintendo Switch dock via the included USB cable or directly to the Nintendo Switch AC adapter (model HAC-002). This method also charges the controllers fully in approximately 3.5 hours. Note that the Charging Grip is sold separately and not included with the console
- Charge via the Nintendo Switch dock USB ports: The dock has USB ports where you can connect the Joy-Cons or Pro Controller charging cables. The console must be powered on or in Sleep Mode for charging to occur
- Use a compatible USB-C wall charger: For Pro Controllers or Joy-Cons, you can also connect them directly to a USB-C wall charger using the appropriate cable to charge without the dock
Additional tips:
- The Nintendo Switch Lite requires the Joy-Con Charging Grip to charge Joy-Cons since they cannot attach to the console itself for charging
- Controllers do not charge if the console is completely powered off; it must be on or in Sleep Mode
- Charging while playing is possible if the controllers are attached and the console is docked and powered
This ensures your Nintendo Switch controllers stay powered for uninterrupted gaming sessions.
