To cite in MLA style in-text, include the author's last name and the page number where the information is found, both enclosed in parentheses, placed directly after the quote or paraphrase and before the punctuation. For example, (Smith 163). If the author is mentioned in the sentence, only the page number is needed in parentheses. If a source has two authors, list both names (Moore and Patel 48–50). For three or more authors, use the first author's last name followed by "et al." (Moore et al. 59). Multiple sources can be cited in the same parentheses, separated by semicolons (Garcia 64; Davies 14). Additional guidelines:

  • Include page numbers without "p." or "pp."
  • If no page number is available, use the author's last name alone (Smith).
  • Place citation before the period unless using a block quote.
  • If citing a source multiple times in a paragraph, include full citation only once, then just page numbers if clear.
  • For sources without authors, use the title in the citation instead.

Each in-text citation must correspond to a full citation in the Works Cited list.
