To clean a dryer vent, follow these steps:
- Clean the lint trap compartment by removing the lint trap and clearing any hidden lint with a wire brush and vacuum.
- Pull the dryer away from the wall, unplug it, and for gas dryers, turn off the gas valve.
- Disconnect the vent hose from the dryer and the wall by loosening clamps or tape.
- Use a dryer vent cleaning brush to remove lint and debris from inside the vent hose and the dryer duct in the wall. Vacuum as you go to collect loosened lint.
- Clean the exterior vent by removing the vent cover and clearing any lint or blockages. Wash the vent cover if needed and replace it with a vent guard to keep out critters.
- Clean the dryer's back panel from lint and dust.
- Reattach the vent hose and clamps securely, plug the dryer back in, turn the gas valve on (if applicable), and push the dryer back into place.
- Run a short air-dry cycle to ensure proper airflow and that the vent is clear.
This thorough cleaning should be done at least once every two years or sooner if drying is slow or the dryer feels hot with a charred smell, as lint buildup can be a fire hazard. Cleaning your lint trap after every load is also important for maintenance and safety.
