To get Mewtwo in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, you need to clear the main story, download the special Mystery Gift that unlocks “Project M,” and then battle and catch Mewtwo in Lysandre Labs. After that, you can also use the Mega Stones from the same event to access Mega Mewtwo X and Y.

Requirements first

• Finish the main campaign and roll the credits; Mewtwo’s quest only unlocks after the story is complete.

• Have an internet connection so you can use the in-game Mystery Gift feature on the Link Play menu.

Get the Mystery Gift

• Open the main menu, go to the Link Play section, then choose the Mystery Gift option and select “Get via Internet.”

• Download the “Project M” gift, which gives you the Mewtwonite X and Mewtwonite Y stones and adds the Project M side mission to your game.

Start Project M

• Travel to Lysandre Café in Lumiose (Magenta Sector), then use the elevator down to B3F to reach Lysandre Labs.

• Walk into the lab area with the computers, interact to “release/unlock Project M,” and a cutscene will trigger with Mewtwo appearing.

Battle and catch Mewtwo

• Approach Mewtwo to start the fight; it is a high-level encounter, so bring strong Dark- and Ghost-type answers and plenty of Ultra Balls or a Master Ball if you have one.

• If you fail to catch it or knock it out, the encounter can be retried, so you are not permanently locked out from getting Mewtwo.

Using Mega Mewtwo

• Once Mewtwo is caught and you have Mewtwonite X and Y, you can use these stones to access Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y in battle, depending on which stone it holds.
