To grow a banana tree, start by choosing a warm, sheltered location with full sun to partial shade and fertile, well-drained soil. Prepare the soil by digging deeply and mixing in rich compost. Plant banana suckers (young shoots growing from the base of an established banana plant) or seeds if available, spacing them 2 to 5 meters apart to allow room for growth. Water regularly to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, and feed the plant with a potassium- rich fertilizer every two weeks during the growing season. Protect the banana plant from strong winds to prevent leaf damage and from freezing temperatures in colder climates by moving container-grown plants indoors or cutting back and storing the plant in a frost-free place in winter. Banana plants can be grown in-ground in warm regions or in large pots that can be moved indoors during cold weather. Repot container bananas into larger pots as they grow, and prune tall stems if needed to manage size.
