To lay artificial grass properly, follow these key steps:
1. Prepare the Area
- Measure and mark the area where you want to install the grass.
- Remove existing turf, soil, and debris to a depth of about 50-75mm (2-3 inches) using a turf cutter or spade.
- Remove stones, roots, and other obstructions to create a clear base
2. Create a Sub-Base
- Lay a base of crushed stone or type 1 aggregate about 50-75mm thick.
- Compact the base thoroughly using a compactor to create a firm, level foundation.
- Optionally, add a layer of fine stone or sharp sand (20-40mm) on top and compact again to smooth the surface and aid drainage
3. Lay a Weed Membrane
- Place a weed-proof membrane over the compacted base to prevent weed growth.
- Secure the membrane around the edges with galvanized nails or staples.
- Overlap and tape any joints in the membrane to maintain coverage and drainage
4. Roll Out the Artificial Grass
- Unroll the artificial grass over the prepared area, ensuring the pile direction is consistent.
- Let the grass acclimatize for about an hour to settle flat.
- If multiple pieces are needed, align edges carefully, cut off excess stitches, and join with synthetic joining tape and adhesive.
- Use a join roller to press seams firmly and create invisible joints
5. Secure the Grass
- Fix the grass to the ground perimeter using turf pegs or U-shaped nails spaced about 300mm apart.
- Ensure the pegs are hammered just below the grass fibers to avoid visibility
6. Add Infill and Brush
- Spread a layer of infill material like kiln-dried silica sand evenly over the grass at about 5 kg per square meter to stabilize the turf and help the fibers stand upright.
- Brush the grass with a stiff broom or mechanical brush against the grain to lift the fibers and give a natural look
Additional Tips
- Create timber or edging borders if needed to keep the grass in place and maintain shape.
- Always check for underground cables or pipes before digging.
- Allow adhesive and infill to settle for 24 hours before heavy use.
Following these steps will ensure a durable, neat artificial grass installation with good drainage and minimal weed growth
