There are several ways to lock the keyboard on a laptop:
- On Windows laptops:
- Press and hold the right Shift key for 8-10 seconds to activate "Filter Keys," which locks the keyboard. A popup will appear to confirm this; click "Yes" to lock it. To unlock, hold the right Shift key again for 8-10 seconds until you hear a beep and the keyboard is unlocked.
- Use the shortcut Ctrl + Alt + L with the "Keyboard Locker" application to lock the keyboard. Type "unlock" to enable it again.
- Device Manager: Go to Device Manager, expand "Keyboards," right-click your keyboard device, and select "Disable device" to lock it. To unlock, enable it again.
- Windows Key + L locks the computer screen and disables keyboard input until login.
- On Mac laptops:
- Press Control + Shift + Power button (or Control + Shift + Eject on older models) to lock the screen and disable keyboard input. Unlock by entering the password.
- Mac does not have a direct keyboard lock shortcut; third-party software may be needed.
These methods primarily apply to Windows 10 and 11 laptops but are common across many models. The easiest and built-in method on Windows is holding the right Shift key for 8 seconds to toggle keyboard lock using Filter Keys.
