To pick up items in Starfield, follow these steps:

• Approach the item you want to pick up and position your crosshair over it.
• Hold down the E key on PC or the A button on Xbox to pick up the item. You can release the button once the item is picked up and move around with it

• Note that not all items can be picked up; typically, miscellaneous objects like barrels, explosives, and some environmental items can be grabbed, but loot inside containers or enemy suits cannot

• While holding the item, you can rotate it by holding the left and right mouse buttons on PC or the left and right triggers on Xbox. To change the rotation axis, press Shift on PC or click the left stick on Xbox

• To throw the item, press and hold the R key on PC or the reload button on Xbox. The longer you hold, the farther the item will be thrown. This is useful for throwing explosives at enemies

• To drop the item without throwing, simply tap the activate button (E on PC, A on Xbox)

This mechanic allows you to interact with the environment creatively, such as using throwable explosives to damage enemies or decorating your ship by placing and rotating objects
