To plant a banana tree, start by selecting a sunny, sheltered location with fertile, well-drained soil. Dig a hole slightly larger than the rootball or sucker, about 60 cm wide, deep, and long, and mix in plenty of compost and manure. Use suckers (new shoots) from mature banana plants, ideally 50 cm to 1 meter high, trimmed and dipped in a potassium permanganate solution before planting. Plant them at the end of the dry season so roots can establish before the rains. Place the sucker so its base is about 10 cm below the soil surface, fill the hole first with topsoil then compost around the plant, and water well. Bananas also need protection from strong winds, regular watering, and fertilizing with potassium-rich nutrients for healthy growth.
