Here is a step-by-step guide on how to pray in Islam (Salah):

  1. Make your intention (Niyyah): Mentally or verbally make the intention for the specific prayer you are about to perform, such as "I intend to offer the 4 rakats of the Zuhr prayer."
  2. Face the Qiblah: Stand in a clean place facing the direction of the Ka'bah in Mecca.
  3. Start the prayer by raising your hands to your ears and saying "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is the Greatest). This is called Takbiratul Ihram.
  4. Place your hands on your chest or just below the navel: For men, place right hand over left below the navel; women place hands over the chest.
  5. Recite the opening supplication quietly: "SubhanaK-Allahumma wa bihamdiKa, wa tabaarak-asmuKa..." followed by seeking refuge from Satan and then recite Surah Al-Fatihah (the Opening Chapter of the Quran), ending with "Ameen."
  6. Recite another portion of the Quran: It can be a few verses or a complete Surah.
  7. Bow down (Ruku): Say "Allahu Akbar" and bow so that your back is level, hands resting on knees, and say "Subhana Rabbiyal Adheem" (Glory be to my Lord, the Great) three times.
  8. Stand up straight (Qiyam): While rising, say "Sami’ Allahu liman hamidah" (Allah hears those who praise Him) and then say "Rabbana lakal hamd" (Our Lord, to You belongs all praise).
  9. Prostrate (Sujud): Say "Allahu Akbar" and go down to prostrate so that your forehead, nose, palms, knees, and toes touch the ground. Recite "Subhana Rabbiyal A'la" (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High) three times.
  10. Sit briefly (Julus): Say "Allahu Akbar" and sit on your legs; recite "Rabbighfir li" (O my Lord, forgive me).
  11. Prostrate again: Say "Allahu Akbar" and repeat the prostration as before.
  12. Stand up for the next Rak’ah: Repeat the steps for additional units of prayer (Rak’ahs) according to the number required for that prayer.
  13. Final sitting (Tashahhud): After the last rak’ah, sit and recite the Tashahhud prayer.
  14. Conclude the prayer by turning the head to the right and left, saying "Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah" (Peace and mercy of Allah be upon you).

There are five obligatory daily prayers with different numbers of Rak’ahs: Fajr (2), Dhuhr (4), Asr (4), Maghrib (3), and Isha (4). This is the general method to pray in Islam, focusing on mindfulness, cleanliness, and following the specific actions and recitations prescribed in the Sunnah and Qur'an.
