To prevent dengue, it is essential to protect against mosquito bites and control mosquito breeding. Key preventive measures include:

  • Wearing clothes that cover as much skin as possible, such as long-sleeved shirts and long pants, especially during the day when the mosquitoes that spread dengue are most active.
  • Using mosquito nets, ideally treated with insect repellent, if sleeping during the day or in unscreened areas.
  • Applying mosquito repellents containing DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus on exposed skin.
  • Keeping windows and doors closed or fitted with screens.
  • Using mosquito coils, vaporizers, or indoor insecticides where mosquitoes are present.
  • Eliminating mosquito breeding sites by disposing of solid waste properly, emptying and cleaning water storage containers weekly, and covering water containers to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs.
  • Environmental management to prevent access to mosquito egg-laying habitats is important.

For travelers to dengue-risk areas, staying in air-conditioned or screened places and taking the above precautions is critical. If symptoms of dengue appear, prompt medical consultation is advised. There is also a dengue vaccine (QDenga) licensed in some countries but it's recommended mainly for children aged 6–16 years in high transmission areas and for those who have been previously infected. Preventive measures remain the main defense against dengue infection.
