To record your screen on a Mac, you have two main built-in options: the Screenshot app (macOS Mojave 10.14 or later) and QuickTime Player.
Using the Screenshot App (macOS Mojave 10.14 or later)
- Press Shift + Command + 5 to open the Screenshot toolbar.
- You will see options to:
- Record the entire screen.
- Record a selected portion of the screen (adjustable by dragging).
- Click Options to:
- Choose a microphone if you want to record audio.
- Show mouse clicks.
- Set a timer before recording starts.
- Select where to save the recording (default is Desktop).
- Click the Record button to start.
- To stop recording, click the stop icon in the menu bar or press Command + Control + Esc.
- A thumbnail appears briefly; click it to edit or wait for the file to save automatically
Using QuickTime Player
- Open QuickTime Player from the Applications folder.
- From the menu bar, select File > New Screen Recording.
- Click the arrow next to the record button to select audio input if you want to record sound.
- Click the red record button.
- Choose to record the entire screen by clicking anywhere or drag to select a portion.
- To stop, click the stop button in the menu bar.
- The recording opens automatically; save it via File > Save
Both methods allow recording with or without audio and provide simple controls for starting and stopping the recording. The Screenshot app is more modern and integrated, while QuickTime Player is a classic alternative. For professional needs, third-party apps like Screen Studio offer enhanced features but are not necessary for basic screen recording
