To remove a Microsoft account from Windows 11, follow these steps:
Switch from Microsoft Account to Local Account
- Open Settings.
- Go to Accounts > Your info.
- Click on Sign in with a local account instead.
- Follow the prompts:
- Enter your current Microsoft account password or PIN.
- Create a username and password for the local account (password can be left blank but a hint is required).
- Click Next , then Sign out and finish.
- Sign back in with your new local account credentials.
This step disconnects your Microsoft account from the Windows login but does not delete the Microsoft account itself
Remove Microsoft Account from Email & Accounts
After switching to a local account:
- Go to Settings > Accounts > Email & accounts.
- Select your Microsoft account under Accounts used by email, calendar, and contacts.
- Click Remove.
- Confirm by clicking Yes.
Note: The Remove button only appears after you have switched to a local account
Remove Other Microsoft Accounts (Work/School or Secondary Accounts)
For work, school, or other Microsoft accounts:
- Go to Settings > Accounts > Access work or school.
- Select the account you want to remove.
- Click Disconnect and confirm.
This removes the sign-in info and data for those accounts from the device but doesn't delete the accounts themselves
Important Notes
- Removing the Microsoft account from Windows only removes it from that device; it does not delete the Microsoft account online.
- Switching to a local account means you lose features like automatic syncing of settings and files across devices.
- You can always add a Microsoft account back later via Settings > Accounts > Your info > Sign in with a Microsoft account instead
This process effectively removes a Microsoft account from Windows 11 and lets you use a local account instead.
