To restart a home router safely, turn it completely off, wait a short time, then turn it back on and let it fully boot up.
Basic power-cycle method
Follow these steps, which work for most routers and modem/router combos:
- Locate your router (and modem if separate) and note how the cables are connected.
- Turn the router off using its power button, or unplug the power cable from the router and the wall outlet if there is no switch.
- Wait at least 30–60 seconds so the device fully powers down and clears its memory.
- If you also unplugged a separate modem, plug the modem back in first and wait 1–2 minutes for its lights to stabilize.
- Plug the router back in or turn its power button on, then wait a few minutes until the status lights show it is online.
- Reconnect your phone/PC/console to Wi‑Fi and test the connection (for example, by opening a website or running a speed test).
Restart using settings or app
Many modern routers can also be restarted through software instead of unplugging:
- From router web page:
- While connected to the router’s network, open a browser and enter the router’s IP (often something like 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1, printed on a sticker on the router).
* Log in with the admin username and password, then look for a “Reboot” or “Restart” option in the menu and confirm.
- From mobile app (if your brand/ISP provides one):
- Open the router or ISP app, sign in, then use the “Reboot” or “Restart router” button.
Important tips
- Do not hold the small “Reset” pinhole button unless you intend a factory reset, which erases Wi‑Fi name, password, and custom settings.
- If restarting does not fix frequent drops or very slow speeds, you may need to update firmware, move the router, check cables, or contact your internet provider.
