To ride a motorcycle, start by putting on proper safety gear including a helmet, gloves, jacket, pants, and boots that cover your ankles. Know your motorcycle’s controls: clutch lever (left hand), front brake (right hand), rear brake (right foot), throttle (right hand twist), gear shifter (left foot), and ignition. Inspect the bike for safety before riding. Mount the bike from the left side, push up the kickstand, and sit comfortably with both feet touching the ground. Start the engine by turning the ignition on, shifting to neutral, squeezing the clutch, and pressing the starter. To begin moving, pull in the clutch, shift to first gear with your left foot, and slowly release the clutch while gradually rolling on the throttle with your right hand to move forward. Keep your body relaxed and centered for balance. Use both brakes gently for stopping. Practice shifting gears smoothly by rolling off the throttle, pulling the clutch, shifting, then releasing the clutch while rolling on the throttle. When turning, enter turns from the outside, move to the inside of the turn, and exit to the outside, looking through the turn. Lean the bike in the direction of the turn using countersteering—momentarily steer opposite to the turn to lean the motorcycle correctly. Avoid braking while turning; instead, maintain or increase speed slightly through the turn. Always ride assuming you are invisible to other drivers and keep your visor closed for good visibility. Begin riding slowly in a low traffic area to build confidence and control. Taking a beginner’s motorcycle safety course is highly recommended to practice these skills safely before riding on busy roads. This process will help gain control and confidence in riding a motorcycle safely and smoothly.
