To learn how to skate, consider the type of skating you want to do, and then follow these steps: Roller Skating

  1. Proper Stance When learning to roller skate, pay attention to your weight and transfer it from one side to the other

. When you feel comfortable, shift from side to side at least ten times before attempting to walk with the skates

  1. V-Glide To start the V-glide, hold the position for 10 seconds, breathing, gliding, and smiling
  1. Weight Transfer Practice shifting your weight from one skate to the other

. Pick up the foot that is not supporting your weight. Once that is comfortable, find a smooth surface, point your toes slightly outward, and repeat the motion

Ice Skating

  1. Lace up tight Ensure that your skates are securely fastened
  1. Body position Stand tall with soft knees, keep your head up, and maintain your weight centered over your skates to maintain balance

. Avoid leaning forward or backward

  1. Get a feel for the ice Take some time to walk around on your blades outside of the rink to get a feel for them

. Practice keeping your feet flat as you pick up your knees

  1. March and Glide Do the same thing on the ice while holding onto the side, working up from holding on with both hands to only one hand, to letting go of the boards and continuing to march

. Take it slow, and between every few steps, pause on both feet and push your knees forward. You should start to glide a little bit

  1. Falling Practice falling, wear protective gear, and relax when you fall to one side to get back up

. To get up, roll onto one knee, plant your opposite skate on the ice, stand on that skate, and straighten your other leg

  1. Rocking horse Start with your heels together and your arms out. Bend your knees and try to make a small circle with the inside of your skates to bring your toes together, keep those knees bent, and bring your heels together so you can go back
  1. Swizzles Start with your heels together, bend your knees, and bring your toes together instead of going back and keep going forward on this one, so toes together, heels together
  1. Snowplow stop Start with your feet together and bend your knees. Point your toes slightly in while you press out and scrape the top layer off the ice

Skateboarding

  1. Determine your stance Determine which foot you will put forward on the board. If you were to run and slide on ice, whichever foot you put forward to slide is likely the foot you will want to put forward on the skateboard
  1. Pushing Learning to push on a skateboard is very similar to walking

. Walk up to your board, put your front foot forward, step onto the board, and give it a push

. When you push on a skateboard, turn your shoulders and front foot toward the nose of the board
