To take a screenshot on a Chromebook, you have several options depending on whether you want to capture the full screen, a partial area, or a specific window:
- Full screen screenshot: Press Ctrl + Show windows key (the Show windows key looks like a rectangle with two vertical lines and is usually in the top row). This captures the entire screen and saves the image to your Downloads folder
- Partial screenshot: Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows key. Your cursor will change to allow you to click and drag to select the area you want to capture. Release the mouse button to take the screenshot, which is saved in Downloads
- Window screenshot: Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows key , then press the space bar to cycle through capture modes until the window capture is selected, then click on the window to capture it
If your Chromebook keyboard does not have a Show windows key, you can use Ctrl + Shift + F5 instead
. Alternatively, you can use the built-in Screen Capture tool by clicking the time at the bottom right of your screen to open Quick Settings, then selecting Screen Capture. This tool lets you choose between full screen, partial, or window screenshots and also supports screen recording
. On Chromebook tablets without a keyboard, press the Power + Volume Down buttons simultaneously to take a screenshot
. After taking a screenshot, the image is saved automatically to your Downloads folder as a PNG file, and it is also copied to your clipboard for easy pasting
. In summary, the quickest method is to press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows key for partial screenshots or Ctrl + Show windows key for full screen captures, with the option to use the Screen Capture tool from Quick Settings for more control
