To treat chigger bites effectively, follow these steps:
- Wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and water as soon as you notice bites to remove any remaining chiggers on the skin
- Apply over-the-counter anti-itch creams or lotions such as calamine lotion, hydrocortisone cream, or ointments containing camphor, menthol, or pramoxine to relieve itching and inflammation
- Use oral antihistamines like diphenhydramine (Benadryl) to reduce itching and allergic reactions, which also helps prevent scratching that could lead to infection
- Apply cold compresses or ice packs wrapped in a cloth to the bites to numb the area, reduce swelling, and soothe itching
- Avoid scratching the bites to prevent skin damage and secondary infections such as impetigo or cellulitis. Keep fingernails short to minimize damage if scratching occurs
- If signs of infection appear -such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, pain, or pus-consult a doctor, who may prescribe antibiotics
- Additional home remedies include taking warm baths with colloidal oatmeal to soothe irritated skin and using antiseptic ointments to prevent infection
Chigger bite symptoms usually improve within a few days but can last up to two weeks. If itching persists or worsens, or if bites appear infected, seek medical advice
