To turn off the French keyboard and switch back to an English keyboard, you can follow these steps depending on your operating system:
For Windows
- Use Keyboard Shortcut to Switch Languages:
- Press Ctrl + Shift or Shift + Alt simultaneously to toggle between keyboard layouts (e.g., French and English). Pressing this combination multiple times cycles through installed keyboards until you reach the desired one
- Remove French Keyboard Layout Permanently:
- Open Control Panel.
- Go to Clock, Language, and Region > Region and Language.
- Click on the Keyboards and Languages tab, then click Change keyboards.
- In the Installed services list, select the French keyboard layout (e.g., Canadian French) and click Remove.
- Make sure only your preferred English keyboard (e.g., US QWERTY) remains.
- Click Apply and OK to save changes
- Disable Keyboard Shortcut for Language Switching (Optional):
- In the same Change keyboards window, go to the Advanced Key Settings tab.
- Click Change Key Sequence and select Not Assigned to prevent accidental switching
- Use the Language Bar:
- You can also use the Language Bar on the taskbar to select the keyboard language manually
For macOS (MacBook Pro)
- Go to System Settings > Keyboard > Input Sources.
- Make sure only the US (or your preferred English) keyboard is listed.
- Remove any French keyboard input sources from the list.
- Also check System Settings > Keyboard > Text > Spelling and set it to US English instead of Automatic to avoid French autocorrect or spellcheck
Following these steps will disable the French keyboard layout and restore your keyboard to English input. If the keyboard still types French characters after removing the layout, restarting your computer can help apply the changes
