To unmerge cells in Excel, follow these steps:
- Select the merged cell or range of merged cells you want to unmerge.
- Go to the Home tab on the ribbon.
- In the Alignment group, click the Merge & Center button dropdown.
- Choose Unmerge Cells from the dropdown menu.
This will split the merged cell back into individual cells. The content of the merged cell will be placed in the upper-left cell of the unmerged range, and the other cells will be empty
. If you want to unmerge cells immediately after merging, you can simply press Ctrl + Z to undo the merge
. To unmerge all merged cells on a worksheet at once:
- Select the entire worksheet by clicking the triangle at the top-left corner or pressing Ctrl + A.
- If the Merge & Center button is highlighted, click it to unmerge all merged cells on the sheet
If you want to unmerge cells and also fill each previously merged cell with the original merged value (so no cells are left blank), you can:
- Unmerge the cells as above.
- Select the range again, go to Home > Editing > Find & Select > Go To Special, select Blanks , and click OK.
- With the blank cells selected, type
=
, then press the Up Arrow key, and then press Ctrl + Enter to fill all blanks with the value from the cell above. - Optionally, copy the range and paste as values to remove formulas
Alternatively, you can unmerge cells by right-clicking the merged cell, selecting Format Cells , going to the Alignment tab, and unchecking the Merge cells option
