To update AirPods, the process is automatic but requires certain conditions:
- Make sure the iPhone, iPad, or Mac paired with the AirPods is updated to the latest version of iOS, iPadOS, or macOS and is connected to Wi-Fi.
- Ensure Bluetooth is enabled and the AirPods are connected to the device.
- Place the AirPods inside their charging case and close the lid.
- Plug the charging case into a power source.
- Keep the AirPods and charging case within Bluetooth range of the device.
- Wait at least 30 minutes for the firmware to update automatically.
- After waiting, open the charging case lid to reconnect the AirPods.
- You can then check the firmware version on your device to confirm the update.
If the update does not happen, try resetting the AirPods and repeating the steps. For AirPods Max, plug the charging cable into the headphones and a power source, keep them in Bluetooth range, and wait similarly for the update process. To check the firmware version on an iPhone or iPad:
- Go to Settings > Bluetooth.
- Tap the "i" icon next to your AirPods.
- Look at the firmware version number.
This process ensures the AirPods firmware is updated with the latest enhancements and bug fixes, improving performance and compatibility with Apple devices.
