To use a neti pot properly for nasal irrigation, follow these steps:

  1. Prepare the saline solution
    • Use distilled, sterile, or previously boiled water that has cooled to lukewarm. Do not use tap water directly to avoid infection risks.
    • Mix the water with a premixed saline packet or neti salt according to the package instructions
  1. Position yourself
    • Lean over a sink and tilt your head at about a 45-degree angle to one side.
    • Keep your mouth open and breathe through it during the process to avoid swallowing the saline
  1. Use the neti pot
    • Place the spout of the neti pot gently into the upper nostril (the one closest to the ceiling). Avoid touching the septum.
    • Pour the saline solution slowly so it flows through the upper nostril and drains out of the lower nostril, carrying mucus and debris with it
  1. Clear your nasal passages
    • Once the neti pot is empty, remove it and lift your head upright.
    • Gently blow your nose to clear out any remaining saline and mucus
  1. Repeat on the other side
    • Tilt your head to the opposite side and repeat the process for the other nostril
  1. Clean your neti pot
    • After each use, clean the neti pot thoroughly with antibacterial soap, 70% isopropyl alcohol, or distilled white vinegar.
    • Rinse it with distilled water and let it air dry to prevent bacterial contamination

Safety tips:

  • Always use safe water sources (distilled, sterile, or boiled).
  • Use lukewarm water to avoid irritation.
  • Stop use if you experience pain, stinging, or if symptoms worsen.
  • Consult a doctor before using on children

This method helps clear nasal passages by flushing out mucus, allergens, and irritants, providing relief from congestion due to colds, allergies, or sinus infections
