To use the Snipping Tool in Windows for capturing screenshots or screen recordings, follow these steps:
Opening the Snipping Tool
- Press the Windows key , type Snipping Tool , and select the app from the search results.
- Alternatively, use the shortcut Windows + Shift + S to open the snipping overlay directly for screenshots.
- For screen recording, use Windows + Shift + R to open the snipping overlay in video capture mode
Choosing a Snip Type
Once the Snipping Tool or overlay is open, select one of these snip types:
- Rectangular Snip : Drag to form a rectangle around the area you want to capture.
- Free-form Snip : Draw a freehand shape around the area.
- Window Snip : Click on a window to capture it.
- Full-screen Snip : Capture the entire screen.
- Video Snip : Select an area to record a video clip of that screen portion
Taking a Screenshot or Recording
- For screenshots, after selecting the snip type, drag or click as needed to capture the desired area. The snip is automatically copied to the clipboard and opens in the Snipping Tool window for editing, saving, or sharing
- For video recording, select the area, click Start , and optionally enable microphone audio. Click Stop when finished. The recording saves automatically to your Screen Recordings folder
Editing and Using Snips
- After capturing, you can annotate the image with pens, highlighters, or erase marks.
- Use the Text actions button to extract text from screenshots or redact sensitive information like emails or phone numbers
- Save the snip by pressing Ctrl + S or copy it to the clipboard with Ctrl + C to paste into other applications like Word or Paint
