To wash blackberries properly:
- Place the blackberries in a colander without overcrowding to allow water to flow freely.
- Rinse under cool running water gently for about 20-30 seconds to avoid bruising or damaging the berries.
- Alternatively, you can soak them briefly in a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts water for 5 minutes, then rinse well under cool water to help kill mold spores and slightly extend shelf life.
- After washing, lay the blackberries on a clean paper towel or dish towel and let them air dry completely for about 30-60 minutes before storing. Proper drying prevents them from becoming mushy or moldy.
- Store in a shallow container lined with paper towels in the fridge for best freshness.
Washing with just cool running water is sufficient for removing pesticides, but using vinegar can provide added cleanliness and preserve the berries longer. Avoid soaking in baking soda solutions too long as it can affect taste and texture.
