A mixture of sand and water can be separated effectively by using a process called filtration. In filtration, the mixture is poured through filter paper placed in a funnel. The water, being a liquid, passes through the tiny holes in the filter paper and is collected below, while the sand particles are too large to pass through and remain trapped on the filter paper. Alternatively, sedimentation followed by decantation can also be used. In this method, the mixture is left undisturbed so that the heavier sand particles settle at the bottom. Then, the water can be carefully poured off (decanted), leaving the sand behind. These methods work because sand is an insoluble solid and water is a liquid, making physical separation techniques feasible without chemical reactions or bonding changes.
