The book cover for If I Did It: Confessions of the Killer is notorious because of how the title is designed to visually read as “I Did It” at first glance. On the revised edition published after the rights were awarded to the Goldman family, the word “If” is printed in very small letters and tucked inside the vertical stroke of the large red letter “I,” so the dominant text is “I Did It: Confessions of the Killer.”
The original, canceled HarperCollins version also featured a large photo of O.J. Simpson with the words “I Did It” in bold red and the word “If” in white and much smaller, reinforcing the same effect. In both versions, Simpson’s name does not appear prominently on the front cover, and in the Beaufort/Goldman family edition he is not credited as the primary author on the front, which instead highlights the Goldman family and the subtitle “Confessions of the Killer.”
