The first email was sent in the year 1971. It was sent by U.S. programmer Ray Tomlinson, who created a program to send messages between computers connected to ARPANET, the precursor to the internet. The email was a test message sent between two computers sitting beside each other and is said to have contained something like "QWERTYUIOP".
