Mario Kart World is a 2025 kart racing game developed by Nintendo EPD for the Nintendo Switch 2. It introduces a major evolution for the Mario Kart series by featuring an open-world design where players can freely drive across a large, seamless map consisting of interconnected regions, including cities, plains, water areas, and volcanoes. Unlike previous Mario Kart titles that had separate tracks, Mario Kart World lets players race through a continuous world with 24 players in races, doubling the player count from earlier games. Key features include a new Knockout Tour mode with elimination checkpoints, classic-style Grand Prix races with interconnected tracks on a large map, off- roading and boat racing segments, rail grinding, wall jumps, and an extensive Battle Mode that includes Balloon Battle and Coin Runners. Players can choose from 50 characters, many customizable with unlockable costumes, and engage in a Free Roam mode for missions and exploration, similar to open-world racing games like Forza Horizon. The game was released on June 5, 2025, as a launch title for the Nintendo Switch 2, receiving praise for its gameplay innovations, soundtrack, and multiplayer experience, though some design choices faced criticism. It has sold over five million copies and is the best- selling game on the Switch 2 platform so far. Mario Kart World mixes traditional Mario Kart gameplay with new open-world elements, aiming to provide a fresh yet familiar racing experience.
