The most significant recent earthquake in Morocco happened on September 8, 2023. It was a magnitude 6.8 earthquake near the town of Oukaïmedene in western Morocco, about 45 miles southwest of Marrakech, occurring at 11:11 pm local time. This earthquake caused over 2,900 deaths and injured 5,500 people, heavily damaging parts of Marrakech and other remote areas in the Atlas Mountains.
There have also been smaller, light earthquakes in Morocco in August 2025, such as a magnitude 2.3 earthquake on August 10, 2025, and a magnitude 3.0 earthquake on August 27, 2025, among others. However, these were relatively minor compared to the 2023 event.
