Mupirocin ointment is a topical antibiotic drug used to treat certain bacterial skin infections, such as impetigo, caused by Staphylococcus aureus (staph) or Streptococcus pyogenes (strep) bacteria. It comes in a strength of 2% or 20 mg/g of ointment. - It is associated with fewer adverse effects than systemic anti-infective therapy.
Negative aspects:
- Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi.
- Mupirocin ointment is contraindicated in individuals with a history of sensitivity reactions to any of its components.
