There are up to 100 distinct locations in Cyrodiil where Oblivion Gates can appear during a playthrough of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. However, no more than 60 gates will actually open in a single game without using console commands
. The gates are divided into two main types:
- Fixed Gates: 20 gates always open during the main quest. This includes the initial gate in front of Kvatch and 10 gates that appear after completing the quest "Find the Heir," each leading to one of seven randomly chosen Oblivion worlds. The other 10 fixed gates lead to specific Oblivion worlds at set locations
- Random Gates: There are 80 possible random gate locations, but only some of these will open during a playthrough, contributing to the maximum of 60 total gates that can appear
The maximum number of gates open at any given time depends on your progress in the main quest. After completing the main quest, all gates close and no new gates will open
