Scented products contain fragrances that are substances possessing strong-smelling organic compounds that have characteristic, pleasant odors. Fragrance ingredients may be derived from petroleum or natural raw materials. Perfumers combine fragrance ingredients to create a scent, selecting from an approved palette of materials that can include ingredients that are alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, esters, lactones, and thousands of registered fragrance ingredients made from these compounds. Fragrances are used in many products as a perfume, and sometimes a fragrance ingredient can be a flavor ingredient because flavors and fragrances use similar chemical messengers in our body.

However, most fragrance chemicals are not disclosed, and some are linked to serious health problems such as cancer, reproductive and developmental toxicity, allergies, and sensitivities. Fragrance ingredients can either be nature-identical or artificial, and natural-identical synthetic fragrances are made from synthetically derived ingredients to have the same chemical composition as a fragrance found in nature. Artificial fragrances are made from synthetic ingredients and have a scent and/or chemical composition not known to be found in nature.

It is important to look out for petrochemicals in a sustainable perfume because many are not biodegradable, and these chemicals contribute to ozone pollution when released into the environment through scented goods such as perfumes. Some of the preservatives to look out for in a sustainable perfume include ethanol, acetone, benzaldehyde, benzyl acetate, camphor, ethyl acetate, methylene chloride, and others. Additionally, manufacturers may add dyes and UV-absorbers, which can also be potentially harmful or damaging to the environment.

If you’re concerned about the ingredients hiding in your products, there are many beauty brands to choose from that do not use Fragrance and disclose every aspect of their product’s ingredients. The labeling of fragrance ingredients is not required, and under U.S. regulations, fragrance and flavor ingredients can be listed simply as “Fragrance” or “Flavor.” This law is not allowed to be used to force a company to tell “trade secrets.” Fragrance and flavor formulas are complex mixtures of many different natural and synthetic chemical ingredients, and they are the kinds of cosmetic components that are most likely to be “trade secrets”.
