The "show me, tell me" questions are vehicle safety questions that learners must answer during their UK driving test. There are two parts:

  • A "tell me" question asked at the start of the test before driving, where the learner explains how they would carry out a safety task.
  • A "show me" question asked during the driving portion, where the learner demonstrates how to perform a safety task while driving.

There are 14 possible "tell me" questions and 7 "show me" questions. Answering these correctly shows knowledge and ability to manage basic car safety features. Examples of "show me" questions include:

  • How to wash and clean the front and rear windscreens
  • How to switch on dipped headlights
  • How to operate the horn
  • How to set the rear demister
  • How to demist the front windscreen
  • How to open and close a side window

Examples of "tell me" questions include:

  • How to check the brakes are working before starting a journey
  • How to check tyre pressures and tread depth
  • How to check the head restraint is correctly adjusted
  • How to check headlights and indicators work
  • How to check oil, coolant, and brake fluid levels

Getting these questions wrong results in a minor driving fault, but dangerous actions during a "show me" question can lead to failing the test outright. These questions have been recently updated for 2025 and are based on current DVSA guidelines for the UK practical driving test.
