Max technically dies in Season 4 when Vecna finishes his attack, but Eleven restarts her heart; by the end of that season she is alive, blind, with all her limbs broken, and in a coma in the hospital in Hawkins. Later reveals for Season 5 show that while her body stays in that coma, her mind or consciousness is trapped inside Vecna/Henry’s psychic “mindscape,” where she’s hiding in a cave-like safe area he cannot reach and looking for a way to help disrupt his plans.
