The Preamble to the U.S. Constitution describes six reasons for establishing the Constitution:
- To form a more perfect union – to create a stronger, more unified nation than under the Articles of Confederation.
- To establish justice – to ensure fairness and equality under the law for all citizens.
- To insure domestic tranquility – to maintain peace and order within the country.
- To provide for the common defense – to protect the nation from external threats.
- To promote the general welfare – to support the well-being and prosperity of all Americans.
- To secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity – to protect the freedoms and rights of current and future generations
