Ulysses S. Grant was arrested for speeding in a horse-drawn carriage. He was reportedly stopped and arrested by police in Washington, D.C. for racing his buggy at high speed, first receiving a warning and then being arrested the next day when caught speeding again. Grant paid a $20 bond after the arrest but did not appear in court, resulting in forfeiting the bond. This incident, if it occurred as reported, would make Grant the only U.S. president to have been arrested while in office. The arrest has been documented primarily through accounts from retired police officer William H. West, who claimed to have arrested Grant in 1872. However, the historicity of the 1872 arrest is debated due to the lack of contemporaneous primary source documents. Previously, in 1866, Grant was also arrested twice for speeding on horseback while serving as commanding general.
