"Voyage of the Damned" is a 2007 Christmas special episode of the British sci- fi series Doctor Who , featuring the Tenth Doctor, played by David Tennant. It first aired on December 25, 2007, on BBC One and was written by Russell T Davies and directed by James Strong
Plot Summary
The episode centers on a spaceship modeled after the RMS Titanic, which is actually an interstellar cruiser from the planet Sto. The ship is on a Christmas-themed cruise orbiting Earth. The Doctor's TARDIS collides with this ship, and he boards it to investigate. The story unfolds as the ship's captain sabotages the vessel, setting it on a collision course with Earth by engineering a meteor strike. This causes catastrophic damage and threatens to destroy the planet. The Doctor teams up with a waitress named Astrid Peth (played by Kylie Minogue, in her only Doctor Who appearance) and other passengers to survive the disaster. They face attacks from the Host—androids resembling angels programmed to kill survivors. The villain, Max Capricorn, seeks revenge on his former company by orchestrating the disaster to bankrupt it and frame its board of directors for murder. Ultimately, Astrid sacrifices herself to save the Doctor by ramming Capricorn, leading to her death. The Doctor manages to restart the ship's engines using the heat from atmospheric entry, stabilizing the ship and preventing Earth's destruction. However, Astrid cannot be fully revived, and the Doctor lets her dissipate, honoring her wish to explore the universe
Reception and Significance
The episode was highly viewed, drawing 13.31 million viewers, making it the highest-rated Doctor Who episode since 1979 and the most-watched since the show's revival. Critical opinions were mixed, with praise and criticism directed at the writing and Minogue's performance. Notably, Astrid is the first companion in the revived series to die permanently, marking a significant and somber moment for the Doctor, who faces the consequences of his failures more starkly than usual
