Children typically start losing their baby teeth, also known as primary teeth, around the age of 5 or 6 years old, but every child is unique and some may lose their first tooth as early as 4 years old or as late as 7 years old. The younger the child was when they got their first tooth, the younger they usually are when they begin losing teeth. Children usually lose their baby teeth in the order they came in, and the timeline tends to look like this:

• Central incisors: 6-7 years old
• Lateral incisors: 7-8 years old
• Canines: 9-12 years old
• First molars: 9-11 years old
• Second molars: 10-12 years old

Children have 20 primary teeth, which they will lose to make room for their permanent teeth. Kids front teeth are often the first to fall out, but again, every child is different. The majority of kids will lose their last primary teeth, the primary second molars, by age 12, though it can occur as early as age 10. If a child loses a tooth before the age of 4, its possible that the adult tooth may not grow in proper alignment, so its a good idea to check in with a dentist if this happens.
