Children typically start losing their baby teeth, also known as primary teeth, around the age of 6. However, the age at which children lose their first tooth can vary, with some children losing their first tooth as early as 4 years old or as late as 7 years old. The timeline for losing baby teeth can vary, but in general, children will lose their baby teeth in the order they came in. The timeline tends to look like this:
- Central incisors: 6-7 years old
- Lateral incisors: 7-8 years old
- Canines: 9-12 years old
- First molars: 9-11 years old
- Second molars: 10-12 years old
Children usually have 20 baby teeth, which they will lose to make room for their permanent teeth. Kids will usually lose all of their baby teeth by the age of 12. It is important to note that there isnt necessarily a problem with early or late tooth loss unless it becomes painful or irritating to the child. If a childs baby teeth stick around long after theyre supposed to have fallen out, its best to talk to their dentist. These "retained" teeth arent always a problem - sometimes its best to remove them, other times they can stay right where they are.
