Geriatrics is the medical specialty dedicated exclusively to providing high-quality, patient-centered care for older adults. Geriatricians specialize in the needs of aging bodies and minds, and they are trained to recognize and treat conditions that are unique to older adults. However, there is no specific age that defines when someone should see a geriatrician. According to the German Society of Geriatrics, the German Society of Gerontology and Geriatrics, and the German Group of Geriatric Institutions, medical treatment of the elderly (geriatrics) starts from the age of 65 years old. However, this definition is not really an adequate definition of an elderly patient and the reason to be treated by a geriatrician. Other factors must be considered in order to define the elderly patient, such as functional reserves and frailty. In general, most patients who have a geriatrician as their primary care physician are 75 years of age or older. However, some people with medical conditions require geriatrics expertise at a younger age. Ultimately, the decision to see a geriatrician should be based on whether the patient and their family think they should, and whether their medical condition causes considerable impairment and frailty.
