Veal is the meat from a calf or young beef animal. Most veal comes from young male calves of dairy breeds which are not used for breeding. Veal calves are typically the Holstein-Friesian breed. Male dairy calves are usually killed at just a few months old. Veal production is closely linked to the dairy industry, and around six million calves are reared for veal within the EU every year. Veal production has a reputation for being exceptionally cruel, and many aspects of veal production result in animal suffering.
