There are six positions in volleyball, each with a specific role to play in the success of the team. The positions are:

1. Setter: This player runs the offense and is responsible for setting up the ball for their teammates to hit. They are also looked to as a leader on the court.

2. Outside Hitter: This player hits and blocks from the left side of the court. They also carry the responsibilities of passing and playing defense when they get to the back row.

3. Opposite Hitter: Also known as the right-side hitter, these players need to be a perfect balance of both offense and defense. They will also get many opportunities to hit the volleyball, so jumping ability is vital.

4. Middle Blocker: The tallest player on the volleyball team, the middle blockers main role is being the first line of defense against the opposing teams hits. They need to read the other teams attackers to quickly raise their arms above the net in a blocking attempt. However, this is not a defense-only position, and the middle blocker will have chances for hitting as well.

5. Libero: This position was added to improve ball control and extend volleys. The libero is not permitted to attack the ball from above the height of the net, and they can only overhand set a front-row attacker from behind the 10-foot line. They are responsible for receiving serves and playing defense in the back row.

6. Defensive Specialist: This player is similar to the libero in that they are responsible for playing defense in the back row. However, they can also hit and block, unlike the libero.

It is important to note that players rotate to a new spot after winning a point that the opponent served, so player positions do not remain constant in a standard volleyball match.
