Aromatic ketones are organic compounds that contain a carbonyl group and two hydrocarbon groups linked in a molecule, where at least one of the hydrocarbon groups is an aromatic base. They are insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents. Aromatic ketones are important industrial raw materials in the chemical and pharmaceutical fields. They can be prepared by the Friedel-Crafts reaction, where most aromatic ketones can react with aromatic chlorides or anhydrides or aromatic hydrocarbons in the presence of aluminum chloride. Examples of aromatic ketones include benzophenone and acetophenone. In the IUPAC system, aromatic ketones are considered benzenesubstituted aliphatic ketones.
