An artisan is a skilled craft worker who makes or creates material objects partly or entirely by hand. These objects may be functional or strictly decorative, such as furniture, decorative art, sculpture, clothing, food items, household items, and tools and mechanisms such as the handmade clockwork movement of a watchmaker. Artisans practice a craft and may, through experience and aptitude, reach the expressive levels of an artist. Artisans were the dominant producers of commodities before the Industrial Revolution.
Artisans can be found in a multitude of fields, showcasing their talents and creativity in various ways. Their daily routines may include jewelry making, ceramics, woodworking, and other crafts. Artisans’ products are usually either completely made by hand or with the help of hand tools. In some cases, they may rely on mechanical means, but there is always some sort of direct manual contribution from the artisan.
Artisan-made goods are often unique and handmade with a personal touch or cultural significance, and are of high quality with great attention to detail and materials. Artisans are ideally respected for their craft and paid a fair, livable wage for their work. Supporting artisans also allows us to support small or local businesses and show that we as consumers care.
